Today's permanent press fabrics have almost made ironing a lost art. But, sooner or later, something is going to need ironing. Here's how to brush up your skills by starting small.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set up your ironing boards and plug in the iron. Let the iron heat. Temperature setting will vary according to the handkerchief fabric. Many irons have an indicator light that will alert you when the iron has reached the proper temperature.

  2. Step 2

Place the handkerchief on the ironing board. Make sure the handkerchief is open completely and as flat as possible.

  3. Step 3

Position the iron point at the top left corner of the handkerchief, and move the iron from left to right, working your way down the fabric. An even, continuous movement is best. Be careful not to make any wrinkles in the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the process on the reverse side of the handkerchief.

  5. Step 5

Fold the handkerchief in half, smoothing down the crease. Place the iron point on the crease and iron it flat. Continue this process until the ironed handkerchief is the desired folded size.

Tips & Warnings
  • A slightly damp handkerchief is easier to iron than one that is completely dry. Remove the handkerchief from the drier while still damp or spray a fine mist on the fabric before ironing.
  • If a really crisp handkerchief is desired, use a commercial spray starch instead of water to dampen the fabric. Don't spray on too much starch; it can leave a white residue.
  • Make sure your iron is set to the proper temperature. If it is too hot, the fabric may scorch.
