Are you itching to skate? Are you anxious to get out there and knock people around? You may be ready for roller derby. If there aren't any teams in your area, you can start your own roller derby league and bring the sport to your city.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • WFTDA application
  • Flat surface
  • Ropes, rope lights or cones
  1. Step 1

Speak to other women in your area and decide if there is enough interest in roller derby to form a league. Most leagues consist of four to five teams with eight women on each team, so you'll need quite a few people.

  2. Step 2

Consider partnering with one or two people to create the league. This will take some of the burden off you and make the process a little easier.

  3. Step 3

Decide how you plan to run your business. You can run your league as a non-profit or for-profit business, whichever you choose. Understand though, that whichever business setup you choose, there will be a sizable amount of paperwork.

  4. Step 4

Choose a name for your league. This can be the most exciting part of the process. With names like the Steel City Derby Demons and the Dallas Derby Devils, the more creative you are the better.

  5. Step 5

Decide how many teams you will have in your league. The number can range from four to five and will depend on the number of women who are interested in roller derby.

  6. Step 6

Apply to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Your league will have to be accepted and pay annual dues, but you will also be nationally sanctioned.

  7. Step 7

Find a place to practice and hold bouts. The possibilities are endless: skating rinks, old theaters, unused gyms or parking lots. Just find somewhere that is safe for the skaters.

  8. Step 8

Set a plan for funding. You can hold fundraisers, take donations and generate revenue with ticket sales. Also consider merchandising and public appearances.

  9. Step 9

Get a website and make it interesting. Most WFTDA teams use websites as marketing tools. You can recruit skaters and sell tickets online.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stick with flat track derby in the beginning. This is much easier to get started since you don't need a special track. You just need a flat surface and ropes, rope lights or cones to mark off the track, and you're ready for a bout. This also puts the spectators closer to the action, something they enjoy.
  • Starting a roller derby league is a huge commitment. If you're up to it, the reward is getting to participate in a roller derby bout. Don't expect to get much in the way of monetary compensation. In most leagues, any money that comes in goes directly back into the league. The skaters aren't compensated.
