How to Pack Artwork for Shipping
Whether you are sending your artwork to buyers or mailing a print to a loved one, you'll want to ensure that your artistic treasures are packed properly for shipping. In only takes a few supplies and a little know-how to keep your artwork safe and secure in the mail.
Things You'll Need
- Packing peanuts
- Packaging tape
- Mirror or strong boxes
- Bubble wrap
- Marker
- Acid free tissue paper
- High-quality cardboard

Pack a Framed Print

Contact shipping or moving companies. These companies carry specialty boxes called mirror boxes or strong boxes.

Wrap the work securely in several layers of bubble wrap. Secure in place with tape.

Reinforce the container. Place your artwork into the container and fill any open spaces with bubble wrap, packing peanuts or tissue paper. Your framed print should be completely immobile within the mirror or strong box.

Seal the edges. Use high-quality mailing tape to seal every edge of your package.

Label the package. Use a bold marker, stamp or label marked "fragile". Make sure that the warning is visible on both sides of the package.
Pack a Flat Print

Protect your print. Cover your entire print (both front and back) with acid-free tissue paper.

Sandwich the print. Place the print between several pieces of high-quality cardboard on both sides.

Tape the sandwiched print. Use high-quality packing tape to tape all edges of the layers of cardboard. Make sure that the print is not able to move within the packaging.

Wrap the package again. Add two more pieces of high-quality cardboard to the outside of the package. Tape the edges of the final cardboard packaging.

Mark the package. Use a bold marker, stamp or label and mark the package with the warning, "DO NOT BEND". You'll want to post this message on both sides of the package.

Tips & Warnings
If you are still concerned that your unframed print may bend, follow the steps in section two for a framed print and further secure the package in a strong box or mirror box.
Contact local moving companies or professional shippers. These companies offer specialized packaging in all shapes and sizes for your framed or unframed artwork and they are familiar with proper packaging techniques.
Fine art can easily be damaged in the shipping process. Always insure your packages before mailing them.
