As the last true avant-garde genre, punk rock reigned in the late '70s and '80s. From punk rock and the '80s big synth dance sound, came electroclash, and it soon became big in its own right peaking around 2001. Unlike punk rock, electroclash's stylized dance sound for rock music lovers puts style and irony over message. Start an electroclash band if you love fashion, humor and sexy dance music.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Figure out where you can pick up instruments and equipment you'll need to start an electroclash band. Start looking into guitars, a bass, keyboards, drums and amps. You might also want to consider a computer since a lot of beats and loops you'll be using are easily replicated with laptops and software. Also, know what your role will be in the band, and start thinking about auditioning other musicians.

  2. Step 2

Feel confident about your own musical skills before beginning to interview other musicians to start your electroclash band.

  3. Step 3

Advertise in your local alternative arts and culture newspaper, such as "The Stranger," for Seattle, WA and "The Austin Chronicle," for Austin, TX. Put up flyers where you can--coffeehouses, record stores,

  4. Step 4

Hold auditions unless you already have enough musician friends to start an electroclash band. Realize that you may need more equipment than people to start the band, e.g., synthesizers.

  5. Step 5

Assemble your band and begin rehearsals. Spend time putting music together and practicing to get ready for events.

  6. Step 6

Look the part and think about a few marketing strategies. See other electronic bands. Find out which ones are most popular and where they're playing. Develop your own style and sound and start an electroclash band.
