Growing garlic chives, also known as Allium chinense, is an easy and delicious hobby. These decorative and tasty perennials can be grown in the ground or simply potted alongside everything else in the herb garden. Use the following tips to grow your own garlic chives.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Garlic chive seed
  • Pot
  • Quality potting soil
  • Garden tools
  • Protective eyewear
  • Gloves
Step1
Purchase a variety of garlic chive seeds from any home improvement store or a local nursery. Garlic chives are grown from seeds and not from cuttings.
Step2
Prepare a pot with a mixture of good quality potting soil. The pot should be at least 18 inches in diameter and over 12 inches deep.
Step3
Germinate garlic chive seeds by planting each seed about ½-inch deep in flats or right into the potting soil. Keep soil temperature to a warm 60 to 70 degree F level for the first 4 to 6 weeks.
Step4
Move the garlic chive plants from the flat, and plant as usual outdoors or into the waiting pot, if needed. Water two or three times a week. Garlic chives are very forgiving when it comes to watering, but be diligent to prevent them from completely drying out.
Step5
Harvest the leaves once they reach a height of 6 inches. Cut the leaves with a sharp implement to prevent tearing of the leaf.

Tips & Warnings

  • When cutting the leaves, only cut what is needed and allow the remaining leaves to grow. This ensures the gardener will always have fresh, tender leaves to cut.
  • Save any remaining leaves by either freeze-drying them or simply placing them in a plastic bag and freezing in the freezer.
  • Use gardening tools with caution. Eye protection and gloves are always a good idea.
