After a day spent at the beach with kids, every family is bound to come home with a bucket of different sized, different shaped seashells. The kids love their treasures and you are wondering what you are going to do with all of them. The best solution is to help the kids make a seashell wind chime using only the best shells from their day at the beach.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 seashells
  • Knitting yarn
  • White glue
  • Hole punch
  • Paint
  • Sequence
  • Feathers
  • Margarine container or a plastic coffee can lid

    Prepare the Shells

  1. Step 1

Clean the shells well in hot soapy water and let them dry completely.

  2. Step 2

Ask your child to pick out the best eight seashells to make your wind chime with.

  3. Step 3

Cut eight pieces of yarn in varying lengths, no shorter than four inches and no longer than a foot to hang the seashells from.

  4. Step 4

Cut another piece of yarn about a foot long to hang the wind chime from.

  5. Step 5

Use either a margarine container or a plastic coffee lid as the top structure for the wind chime.

  6. Step 6

Punch eight holes, evenly spaced, along the outer edge of the top piece. These will be where the yarn with the seashells will hang.

  7. Step 7

Punch two more holes close together near the center of the base. This will be where yarn is attached to suspend the wind chime from the ceiling.

  8. Construct the Wind Chime

  9. Step 1

Glue the end of each piece of string to the inside of each seashell and set them aside to dry.

  10. Step 2

Paint and decorate the base with craft paint, feathers, sequence and other decorations. Set aside to dry.

  11. Step 3

Line up the seashells in the order you want them to be hung.

  12. Step 4

Teach the child how to push the yarn through the outside holes and tie a knot to secure the yarn to the base.

  13. Step 5

Attach all eight seashell strings to the eight holes along the outside edge of the base.

  14. Step 6

Push the long piece of yarn through the two middle holes and tie a secure knot.

  15. Step 7

Hang your seashell wind chime from the ceiling, in a windowsill or from a tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • Seashells can easily be purchased at craft stores if a trip to the beach is not an option.
  • Before hanging the seashell wind chime be sure to double check all the knots to make sure they are secure.
