A book group can be a fantastic way to meet a community of like-minded people interested in opening a stimulating discussion about socially and culturally relevant works of literature. Additionally, it can provide the book group members with an excellent chance to socialize and develop a community bond. However, organizing a group of fellow book enthusiasts may prove daunting without a certain degree of planning and forethought.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Contact a facility that will be able to host an event of the kind your are interested in hosting. Some excellent locations include a local recreation center, a library, or even a local bookstore.
Step2
Make an appointment to speak with whoever is responsible for maintaining the facility you intend to use. Direct communication with this individual is essential so that everyone understands what the book discussion group is allowed to do without competing with other events that might be scheduled in a nearby area.
Step3
Decide whether your group will concentrate on a theme or function as a general interest organization. Many book reading groups are focused on a particular theme or ideology.
Step4
Post advertisements for your reading group in prominent places where prospective members will be likely to see them.
Step5
Schedule a time for your meetings that is least likely to pose scheduling problems for members who work full-time during the day.
Step6
Consider a list of prospective titles to read and discuss that will encourage your members to stay on top of the reading. A group that loses interest in its reading material will tend to dwindle and suffer from a lack of interaction during your meetings.
Step7
Think about providing some light refreshments during your meeting. Coffee is always a good idea to keep people jazzed up for some book talk.
Step8
Remember to encourage comments from everyone in the group and never embarrass or put a specific person on the spot.
