1. Buy a wireless router that has a built-in firewall and 128 bit encryption. A firewall and 128 bit encryption, if activated, can make a wireless network impenetrable. Most of the routers are plug-and-play devices and do not require complex configuring.
2. Connect the wireless router to your high-speed modem and turn it on. Next, restart your computer and follow the on-screen prompts. Use the recommended settings which are already pre-programmed for the router.
3. Activate the router setup wizard that will guide you through the configuration of the firewall and network key. The network key is a kind of password and has to be either numbers or letters. The length depends on the kind of router being used. Most routers will allow either 10 or 26 combinations of characters.
4. Activate the wireless router firewall that gives access to trusted computers only. You can use the built-in firewall which is present in the computer operating system or a firewall in the wireless router and antivirus software.
