If you want to recreate the simple yet sexy look of a choker à la Nicole Kidman's in "Moulin Rouge," you can do so by making a velvet choker yourself. This choker is deceptively easy to make and you'll have a ready-to-wear necklace in no time at all.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the width of your neck using a measuring tape.

  2. Step 2

Add two inches to the width of your neck; this is the length you will need to cut the ribbon to make your necklace. Adding two inches is necessary to make sure you have some breathing room in the necklace when you're wearing it.

  3. Step 3

Cut the ribbon to size. Also cut a square about ½ or ¾ inch in length of the Velcro.

  4. Step 4

Glue one side of the Velcro on one end of the ribbon and the opposing side on the other end. You can also sew the Velcro on if you want to ensure its security on the ribbon.

  5. Step 5

Decorate your necklace by sewing on a Renaissance-inspired cross, a teardrop-shaped bead pendant or a cameo broach in the center of the ribbon. You can also use hot glue to affix some burnished crystals or beads.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try creating different designs with this necklace. Since it's so easy to make, you can play around with various accessories to create an array of looks.
  • Choose black or a deep crimson velvet for a dramatic and dressy look. Navy and dark purple are lovely choices as well.
