How to Get a Cosmetology License in Louisiana

Studying to be a cosmetologist is an involved process that ends with a license to practice cosmetology. It involves course work, examinations and practice with actual clients. All states require cosmetologists, estheticians and manicurists to be licensed. In Louisiana, however, the process includes some aspects that are different from any other state.

  1. Step 1

    Register for and attend an accredited cosmetology school. To find a school near you, visit the Beauty Schools Directory website. The Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology website also lists accredited schools within the state.

  2. Step 2

    Complete 1,500 hours, 36 weeks of course work and hands-on practice while attending the school. The courses cover all aspects of cosmetology including scientific concepts, the physical services provided to clients, chemical services, hair designing and the Louisiana Cosmetology Act Rules and Regulations.

  3. Step 3

    Apply for the required written and a practical exams. The process for examination requires an application, a student registration certificate, a photo of the student and an initial licensing fee.

  4. Step 4

    Pass the tests. Candidates must be cleared by the cosmetology school and the state board before they can begin the examination process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a mannequin with a styled head of hair to the practical skills examination. During the test, you must perform a comb-out on the mannequin along with other practical work.
