How to Identify a Horned Owl

Horned owls can be found around the globe. They are identifiable by their "horns" or "ear tufts" which are neither horns nor ear tufts. Owls in this classification are distinguishable by tufts of feathers on the tops of their heads that resemble horns. One of the most recognizable horned owl is the Great Horned Owl. This large owl can be found in North and South America.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Look in the owl's favorite places. Great Horned Owls live all over North and South America. The owl is adaptable and lives in many different habitats including forests, deserts, mountains, swamps and urban areas including city parks.

  2. Step 2

    Keep an eye out for the big bird. Great Horned Owls, as well as all members of the horned owl family are very large. They range from 18 to 25 inches long, have a wingspan of 30 to 60 inches, and weigh between 2 and 4 pounds.

  3. Step 3

    Notice the owl's colors. Great Horned Owls range in color between browns, blacks and reds with white mixed in. White patches are also found under their beaks. Distinctive to Great Horned Owls are their large, yellow eyes.

  4. Step 4

    Listen for its call. Great Horned Owl voices can be identified by a series of 3 to 8 deep "whoo" sounds. They also make shrill shrieks and low, territorial hoots that can be heard from miles around.

  5. Step 5

    Watch the birds as they feed. Owls hunt at night and eat many different things. Great Horned Owls mostly eat small to medium sized mammals like rabbits. Great Horned Owls can feed on birds of all sizes including other raptors. They also eat fish, crustaceans, insects and carrion.
