How to Behave at a Catholic Mass

For those who have grown up in the Catholic Church, the rituals of the Mass are second nature. If you're a non-Catholic guest at a wedding or funeral Mass, a traveler or invited by a friend, the Mass is foreign. Attending a service of a religion other than your own, gives you the opportunity to learn the practice of another faith; it also deepens your appreciation of your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress conservatively. Many Catholics attend mass in jeans and shorts, but follow the lead of your host. If you are attending a wedding or funeral, observe traditional dress for these occasions.

    • 2

Observe silence or speak softly so that the sound doesn't travel. Many people feel free to chat openly during the Mass, but it disturbs those who wish to pray or meditate.

    • 3

Make the sign of the cross with holy water upon entering the church. Non-Catholics are welcome to do so.

    • 4

Genuflect (kneel briefly on one knee) before entering the pew and again when leaving the church.

    • 5

Stand and join in the entrance hymn as the altar servers and priest enter the church. Feel free to remain silent.

    • 6

Stand, sit and kneel in accordance with those in attendance. In most Catholic churches today, there is little kneeling during the Mass, though a few older adults may continue the practice. Follow the majority.

    • 7

Wait until the celebrant has ended the Mass and exited the church before you leave your seat.

Tips & Warnings

  • The page numbers of hymns for the Mass are usually posted at the front of the church. Hymn books are located in each pew.

  • Avoid making your appearance or conduct a source of distress to others.

  • If you don't understand a part of the Mass, or don't agree with something, don't let your facial expression betray your feelings.
