Knowing how to properly identify a saltwater Salmon can mean the difference between fishing within the regulations and outside them. These steps will help you identify 2 different types of salmon found on the west coast when you head out for your next fishing trip.

Instructions

Identify Chinook (King) Salmon

Step 1

Look at the lower jaw at the base of the teeth. It should be black. This is the primary identifying feature of the Saltwater Salmon.
Step 2

Check the tail fin ray. It should be smooth.
Step 3

Examine the tail lobes. There should be spots on both tail lobes.

Identify Coho (Silver) Salmon

Step 1

See what color the jaw is at the base of the teeth. For a Coho, it should be white.
Step 2

Feel the tail fin. The tail fin should be ribbed.
Step 3

Notice the spots on the lobes. For this species of salmon, the spots should be mostly on the upper tail lobes.
