-
1
Read missionary biographies. Getting to know those who have followed this path before you can be a great encouragement and challenge.
-
2
Study the history of mission work and the countries you are most interested in. Read the newest addition of "From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya, a Biographical History of Christian Missions," by Ruth A. Tucker (Zondervan 2004).
-
3
Determine if you and your spouse are on the same page where your calling is concerned. If he or she doesn't feel the same way, it is wise to wait until you both are ready.
-
4
Contact several mission agencies that work in the countries you are interested in. This can be done through your local church or denominational office.
-
5
Apply to the mission agency of your choice to become a foreign missionary. Each agency you apply to will have a unique set of requirements that have to be fulfilled in order to serve.
-
6
Decide if you need to go back to school or begin seminary. This will depend on the educational requirements of the agency you will be serving with.
-
7
Come up with a list of potential supporters from your church, community and state. Begin scheduling times to present your passion for the mission work and why you need their financial support.

Tips & Warnings
Talk to missionaries who are serving in the country you are interested in. They will not only be an inspiration, but will supply you with a wealth of first hand knowledge.
Develop relationships with persons of influence in your church or denomination. These people can get the word out about your work faster than you can by yourself.
These are simply the beginning steps on the road to foreign missionary service. There will also be internships, interviews, psychological profiles, physicals and language study along the way.
