How to Become a Forest Ranger

Understand the mental demands on forest rangers. Forest rangers often work in remote areas far from others.

Be in good physical condition. The work of a forest ranger is vigorous and physically challenging.

Take and pass a state civil service test. This test may be combined with other tests such as vision and physical fitness.

Graduate with a Bachelor's or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university. Degree must have a concentration in some area of environmental science or other related field.

Graduate with an Associates Degree in forestry, environmental science, forest management or other related degree. This can be in place of a bachelor's degree depending on individual state requirements.

Enroll in a gun safety or firearm training class. Forest rangers are required to carry and use firearms when necessary.

Apply to the U.S. Forestry Service or your state forestry service for employment as a forest ranger. During the application process there will be other requirements specific to a particular position, area or type of forestry work you are applying for.
