How to Teach PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is presentation software that allows users to create all kinds of slide shows and presentations. It may take more than one session to teach someone the basics of PowerPoint, but giving them the tools to use PowerPoint allows them to be creative and make useful presentations in minutes.

Instructions

  1. Basic PowerPoint

    • 1

Show the student how to access the Help Menu and how to use the Excel Office Assistant that pops up to lend a helping hand.

    • 2

Teach the students the vocabulary used in PowerPoint. A slide is a specific screen used in presentations. A presentation file is the entire saved Excel presentation. An object is any element that appears in a presentation. A sideshow is a group of slides that are played in a specific sequence. Transitions are the way the presentation moves from one slide to another.

    • 3

Teach the students how to use layouts when creating slides. The layouts are placed on each slide to make it easier to add text, pictures and charts.

    • 4

Show them how to insert sounds and animations into the slides. A sound can be used for one slide or for a series of slides.

    • 5

Explain how to preview and save a presentation.

    Toolbars

    • 6

Show students the toolbars available to them and the functions of the standard toolbar. The standard toolbar, placed at the top of the screen, includes the tabs for common tasks like creating new slides, spell check, inserting charts or tables, saving and viewing the presentation.

    • 7

Tell the students to find the formatting toolbar below the standard toolbar. It contains tools for designing the text. You can change the text's size, font, style and color from this toolbar.

    • 8

Ask the students to look at the bottom of the screen for the drawing toolbar. This toolbar provides the user with options to create curves, angles, shapes and lines.

    • 9

Explain how to use the common task toolbar. It is a small window that can be moved around the screen and allows the user to open new slides, design layouts and design slides. This toolbar can be docked at the top of the screen. Click and drag the toolbar to the bottom of the formatting toolbar.

    • 10

Demonstrate how to use the other tool toolbars like the picture toolbar and the animation effects toolbar.

    • 11

Remove a toolbar by clicking "View" in the standard toolbar. When the sub-menu pops up, click the check beside the toolbar you want to hide. It removes the check thereby removing the toolbar.

    • 12

Assign a project to the students that requires them to use all the skills they have learned.
