Although relatively rare, cars do get stolen while the driver is still in it. There are precautions you can take to prevent this unfortunate event from occurring. Remember and share these steps with those you love to protect yourself and your loved ones from being carjacked.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan ahead and think about your reactions to common scenarios thieves use to attack. The carjacker is counting on the element of surprise, so knowing what you would do if someone approached you, or having an escape plan will help you counter an attack and prevent you from being a victim.

  2. Step 2

Hold your car keys in your hand and walk with purpose when going to your car. Attackers do not discriminate when it comes to place, people or times to act. Add or remove items quickly from the trunk and car seats.

  3. Step 3

Stay alert and be wary of people who ask for directions or who are handing out fliers. Look around, inside and under the car before getting in, then get into your car quickly and lock the doors. Talking on your cell phone while walking to your car makes you an easier target because you are not as aware of your surroundings.

  4. Step 4

Keep your doors locked and windows rolled at least partway up while you drive. Refuse to roll your window down to a stranger. Drive with a passenger (especially at night) when possible.

  5. Step 5

Park in well-lit areas where people are more likely to be. Keep all valuables (money, purse, wallets and cell phone) hidden out of site. Take your keys, purse, wallet and cell phone with you when you get out. Have your cell phone ready to call 911 if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • While you can be a target anywhere, some of the most likely places people have been carjacked are intersections where you are required to stop (light or sign), garages or parking lots, self-serve gas stations or car washes, ATMs and residential driveways and streets.
  • If you do get carjacked, don't argue with the attacker. Your life is worth more than your car and possessions.
  • If you see a stranger whose car is broken down, do not stop. Instead call the police to help the person.
  • If someone rear ends you, especially if not many people are around, resist the urge to jump right out of your car to inspect the damage. When this is the case, signal the car to follow you and go to a location where there are more people or to the closest police station.
