If you live in an area that accumulates a lot of snow, you need to have snow removal equipment on hand. Snow removal equipment ensures that your sidewalks and driveway are safe to walk on. Depending on the size of your property, you may need several snow removal items.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Start with a shovel. The most basic piece of snow removal equipment is a basic snow shovel. The shovel should be wide enough to pick up a large amount of snow at a time without overly weighing it down.
Step2
Consider a snow auger. A rolling snow auger eliminates the traditional lifting and throwing of snow by snow shovel. You simply roll the snow auger over an area and it will release the snow to the side of the area. This piece of snow removal equipment is ideal for sidewalks.
Step3
Invest in a snow blower. Snow blowers work much like a lawn mower. You can choose a blower that you push or a model that is self-propelled. You push the machine over walks and driveways that need to be cleared and it pushes the snow to the side.
Step4
Purchase a snowplow if you have a very large property. Snowplows can be attached and detached to your truck and used to plow large areas filled with snow. This is the least practical and most expensive option for most homes.
Step5
Look for used snow removal equipment. Any of these items can be found used in the classifieds or at yard sales. Since snow removal equipment is not used often, it can typically be found in good shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should also buy a de-icer before an expected snow fall. If you apply a de-icer, it makes snow removal easier.
  • You can apply wax to a shovel in order to prevent snow from sticking while you are working.
