1
Determine how much of the hair you want to trim. A hair cut is different from a trim in that considerably less is cut when you are trimming the hair as opposed to when you are giving a hair cut. When there is a hair trim, generally cut about ¼ to no more than ½ an inch off.

2
Comb the hair straight down from the front to the back and on the sides. You can part the hair slightly in the middle to make it easier to handle or just comb the hair straight back from the from of the head.

Part the hair upwards from the nape of the neck from one ear side to the other. Secure the remaining hair with a hair clip to move it out of your way. Make 3 small hair sections in the back. Start at the middle section and run your fingers down the hair, holding the hair shaft in between the second and third fingers.

4
Use your fingers as a guide at the tip of the hair and trim about ¼ of an inch of the ends. Take the left section of the hair and match it up to the middle section and trim it also, using the middle section (that was just trimmed) as your guide. Work your way up to the middle sections just as you did the nape of the neck section, parting a small section off, matching it ups and trimming off the ends.

5
Trim the top and the side sections of the hair by combing them straight down on the sides and into the face for the front and start the same way you did with the back section. Work on the left side first, then the right side. If there is a bang, let it fall naturally then trim it where it stops. Comb the hair through one final time after you've completed it to check for evenness in the hair.
