Choosing a hymn for a funeral can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. The hymn selection is a wonderful way to celebrate and reflect the character or beliefs of the deceased, or even to express the feelings of those left behind.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A hymnal
  • Knowledge of the funeral arrangements
  • A musical instrument (usually a piano)
  • Musician to play the instrument
  1. Step 1

Look through the hymnal to find fitting titles. These songs can be old favorites of the deceased or songs that express spiritual beliefs about death and the afterlife. Choosing an appropriate hymn is a matter of taste.

  2. Step 2

Talk to family members and friends. They may be able to give more insight into the deceased's favorite music. Speak to members of the church, temple or synagogue for more ideas.

  3. Step 3

Arrange for a musician, if one has not already been booked. Find someone who is familiar with the style of music and if possible the hymn itself.

  4. Step 4

Determine the appropriate time for the hymn to be played. Many funerals have music at different points throughout the ceremony.

  5. Step 5

Choose your hymn. Base your decision on what you know and have learned about the deceased, also consider any special requests.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all pianists or organ players are familiar with every hymn. Check early to make sure that they are familiar with your choice or give them time to get to know the hymn.
