Step 1
Consider cost. These days, many colleges cost quite a bit, making cost a big factor in how many adolescents choose where to go to college. Research possible universities and schools to find out what fees are due for classes, lodging, extra curricular activities and supplies.
-
Step 2
Choose a major with your child. Talk with your child about what his or her interests are and what career choices may be available to your son or daughter. Certain universities can have an emphasis on particular majors or minors, as well as some schools with great accreditation for specific educational programs.
-
Step 3
Research schools known for specialized programs that your child is interested in. Look at who the professors are in those programs and what their backgrounds are.
-
Step 4
Narrow down your search by looking at schools closely and comparing them. Find out which of the accredited schools meet your child's specific needs, and make a small list of these schools.
-
Step 5
Help your child look at a school's social life. Choosing a school isn't only making an educational choice, it also determines how much of a social life your child will have. Determining what sports programs, local activities and nearest large cities are also factors to look into.
-
Step 6
Find out how far the schools are from home. If your child wants to call home or come home to visit often, you'll want a school fairly close to home. Your high school grad may also want to branch out, making a far away university more appealing.
-
Step 7
Look at how much credit some schools are given in the working world. A degree from a well known school in the business world may not hold as much weight as a degree from a university with a focused reputation. Examine what your child wants to do, making it easier to choose a good school.
