If you have been turned down for health insurance, it might be that you have a bad insurance rating. Many elements go into determining your insurance rating. Here's what you should know about challenging your bad insurance rating.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Find out why you have been charged with a negative rating. Usually, you'll be given a low rating based on problems found in a medical exam or evidence that your lifestyle may cause problems in the future. Some of the things that may cause you to have a bad rating include obesity, high cholesterol, smoking and alcohol consumption. Of course, in order to fix the problem, you have to know what it is, so call the insurance company, find out what the problem is, and get it in writing.
Step2
Fix the problem. If they say you have a weight problem, consider going on a diet. If your smoking or drinking habits are the problem, cut back some. If the bad rating is due to your cholesterol or blood pressure, eat healthier. And don't get upset about the reason for the rating.
Step3
Visit the doctor. Just telling your insurance company that you lost weight or quit smoking isn't enough for them. They need proof. Go to your doctor and inform them of the cause of your poor insurance rating. They'll check you out and see if you've remedied the problem enough for the insurance company's needs. If you have, they'll give you the written documentation of it.
Step4
Mail your insurance company the proof of your changed health. Send the insurance company a letter informing them of your steps to remedy the problem causing your bad rating. Include the written proof from the doctor you visited. Request that your rating be altered.
Step5
Follow up with a phone call. Call your insurance company to make sure they've received your mailing and that someone is reviewing (and hopefully taking care of) your case. They should adjust your rating so it won't be a problem anymore.
