When it comes to going to the gym, motivation is key. Getting there is half the battle and completing an exhausting five mile run can prove even harder. Having the right playlist will keep you on track and energized. Arm yourself with an inspired soundtrack by following the guidelines below.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • MP3 player or iPod

Step1
Think about your gym routine. You may begin with a warmup and work toward a high energy cardio workout. Consider the order of activities when forming a suitable playlist.
Step2
Recall favorite songs that put a smile on your face. Top 40 or songs from your favorite decade are the perfect way to get you in the mood for working out. These songs will begin your playlist and will accompany you as you warm up and stretch before your high energy workout.
Step3
Choose songs that have an upbeat tempo, fast beat and make you want to dance. These songs will provide background for high energy workouts like running or using other cardio machines.
Step4
Select songs that incite a mellow mood and are relaxing. Instrumentals, New Age and slower tempos make for good wind down music. These songs will play at the end of your workout as your heart rate lowers.
Step5
Download all your songs onto your MP3 player or iPod. Pay close attention to the order of songs and make sure it coincides with your workout routine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Smaller MP3 players and iPods are best for working out. Clip the unit onto your arm or shorts.
  • Do some Internet research to get good song suggestions. Many people list their playlists for working out on Blogs and in forums.
  • Consider a compilation CD. Such mixes include select songs well suited for various activities.
  • Browse through your CD collection to choose playlist songs.
  • Pay attention to lyrics. Look for songs that contain inspiring lyrics.
  • Always check the battery power in your music player. There's nothing worse than losing your music in the midst of an arduous workout.
  • If you're downloading songs, you must obey copyright laws to avoid fines or penalties.
