Stir the stain to begin the process. Also, stir the stain throughout the application process.

Apply the stain to your wood with a foam pad or wipe it on.

Wipe the stain on going with the grain of the wood at first. Then do it diagonally in both directions to make sure you're getting the stain on all the spots of the wood. Then apply the stain again going with the grain once again.

Leave the stain on the wood for a fairly decent length of time. Check the can of stain to find out how long the manufacturer recommends you leave the stain on.

Wipe off the stain the best you can after the recommended length of time as dictated by the manufacturer of the stain.

Remove any excess stain by rubbing it immediately with rag soaked in some paint thinner.

Apply a second coat of oil based stain, if so desired.

Apply oil based stains outside or in well ventilated areas.
If your piece of furniture is stripped and has surfaces with old stain on it, you'll want to apply as much stain to the piece of furniture as possible. Try several coats.
