Common home rugs can become frayed after months and years of usage. Fraying on rugs happens when the edges are walked on or endure various stages of abuse and stress from normal or abnormal usage. Here's how to fix a frayed rug.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  1. Step 1

Cut the frayed edge fairly evenly along the edge where the wear has occurred. With scissors, remove the excess fray along your rug.

  2. Step 2

Sew over the edge of the rug that's frayed, starting about one half of an inch below where the damaged area begins. Wrap the thread tightly around the frayed area until it's completely covered and you can no longer see the frayed rug damage.

  3. Step 3

Sew the area about one quarter of an inch into the rug away from the fray. You want to make sure none of the loose frayed threads catch on the needle and increase the damage.

  4. Step 4

Secure the end of your needling around the end of your new sewing job tightly, so it won't shake loose.

  5. Step 5

Take your rug to a professional for repair, if your rug is valuable or if it's a major repair job.

Tips & Warnings
  • When mending your frayed rug, use thread that matches the colors in your rug.
  • If at any point when you're mending your frayed rug you realize you can't complete the job well enough to prevent further fraying, have your rug professionally mended.
  • Clean your rugs regularly to reduce fraying.
  • Watching the amount of use and stress your rugs endure and working to minimize the stress on your rugs can keep your rugs better maintained.
