How to Choose Eye Shadow

Choosing a type of eye shadow is almost as important as choosing an eye shadow color. Eye shadow comes in liquids, powders, creams, roll ons and pencils. Each type can provide you with a beautiful look but before you select a type of eye shadow, there are several things to consider.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit a beauty counter in a department store where you can touch, feel and sample eye color before you buy it. Beauty consultants that make home visits are another option.

  2. Step 2

Try a powder eye shadow if you enjoy applying makeup with brushes and are adept at blending. Powder is the most popular choice because it is so easy to apply and comes in many colors.

  3. Step 3

Choose a liquid eye shadow in a tube for smooth application. These glide right on with your fingertip and are usually waterproof. Sensitive-eyed girls might find a liquid shadow less irritating than others. Blending with other colors is easy, too.

  4. Step 4

Use a pencil eye shadow if you prefer ease of application. Some pencils double as eye liners so you can apply two makeup steps at once. You also can keep pencils in your purse and apply a quick touch-up throughout the day.

  5. Step 5

Choose an eye color pencil that is soft and easy to apply. A hard pencil will tug at your tender eyelid skin and stretch it while a soft pencil will glide on and be easy to blend with your finger.

  6. Step 6

Select a roll on eye color for a quick application of a fun and funky color. Roll ons glide onto your skin with ease and can blend well. Most come in sparkly fun colors that you can wear on special occasions.

  7. Step 7

Choose a cream eye shadow if you prefer sheer colors with a soft applicator. Some come with a sponge-tipped wand that you can glide over your eyelid to apply color. These are convenient products that you can slip into your purse when you are on the go.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some powder eye shadows might flake and irritate sensitive eyes.
