If you have a playroom that you wish to decorate to suit a boy, you have numerous styles from which to choose. Decorating a boy's playroom is easier to do than choosing gender neutral designs. To make over his playroom, pick a theme and plan the room around it.

From Quick Guide: Build a Playroom
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discuss ideas with your child. Speak to your child about possible themes that you can use to decorate the playroom. If he really likes bugs or dinosaurs, you may choose to revolve the room design around these things.

  2. Step 2

Start with the walls. Choose a paint color that works well with your theme. Although the playroom is for a boy, you don't have to stick with blues. Greens, reds, yellows and browns can also work in the room.

  3. Step 3

Paint a mural or put up a wall border. Breathe more life into the room by further decorating the walls. For example, if your son wants a jungle playroom, use stencils to place jungle animals throughout the room.

  4. Step 4

Find a matching throw rug. Put down a rug in the room that matches your chosen theme. Keep it away from an area that art supplies or crafts will be used.

  5. Step 5

Choose wood furniture that is functional. A boy's playroom furniture does not need the frills that may appeal to girls. Pick basic pieces: table, dresser and toy chest in a matching wood color.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should always choose a theme that will last for several years. You don't want to choose a dinosaur theme if you feel that your child will outgrow it soon.
  • Do not spend an exorbitant amount of money on the furniture that you purchase for the playroom. It is bound to sustain damage from frequent use by your child and his friends.
