Depending on the size and layout of your yard, choosing a location for your new patio may be quite easy. However, if you have a large yard, you may have many different possibilities. To best improve your home and yard, make sure you choose the most tranquil and convenient location. Spend time in your yard prior to building your patio to make sure you have chosen the perfect location.

Step1

Find an area of your yard that is private or that you can make private. A patio is a gathering place so you want to be able to have conversations and meals without feeling too exposed.

Measure the proposed patio site. If you need to create privacy, make sure you have enough room to properly landscape or build a privacy wall or fence.

Step3

Set up chairs and a table in your chosen area. Relax there for a while to decide if you will be comfortable in that area.

Bring out food and drinks. Before making a commitment to a certain site, consider how difficult it is to transport food and drinks from your kitchen to your patio.

Pay attention to shade and tree debris in your chosen location. A shady corner of your yard may be just what you are looking for, but the type of trees in that location may overwhelm you with tree debris.

Try different locations to determine the best site for your patio.

If you are tight on space, make sure you know what size table and chairs you will put on your new patio. You need to have enough room to sit around your table and push your chairs out when standing up.
You should always try out more than one location to make sure you are comfortable with your decision.
Avoid planting or building your patio near trees or bushes with berries. The berries, and the birds that eat them, may stain your patio surface.
