How to Save Endangered Gorillas

Gorillas are one of the most endangered species in the world today. Human actions have placed the largest of the apes in danger of extinction. With no natural predators, it's up to humans to take the initiative and work to save endangered gorillas in the wild.

Instructions

    • 1

Donate money to conservation efforts. There are a number of organizations, such as Diane Fossey's Mountain Gorilla Project, working to protect wild gorillas.

    • 2

Adopt a wild gorilla. Some conservation efforts raise money for research and protection by having people "adopt" gorillas. Often, your donation gives you a photo of the gorilla you adopted and information about her.

    • 3

Buy products from companies or organizations that donate a portion of the proceeds to help save endangered gorillas. Research the products you buy to avoid purchasing those which pose a threat to gorilla habitat. Steer clear of purchasing any product or food which has been made from a gorilla.

    • 4

Work or volunteer in gorilla conservation organizations. Participate in research studies, monitor gorilla populations and promote public awareness. Even if you don't want to move to gorilla territories, you can fund raise or participate in charity events in your hometown that benefit gorillas.

    • 5

Teach children about gorillas and earth-friendly practices. Educating others about ways to save gorillas and other endangered animals helps protect them in the future. Subscribe to newsletters and publications from gorilla conservation organizations to stay up to date on information and gorilla news.

    • 6

Contact policymakers to support conservation and peace efforts in areas where gorillas live. Logging and the loss of habitat are major threats to gorillas. Likewise, armed conflict in gorilla areas led to many gorilla deaths in the 1990s. Promoting peace and sustainable habitat helps to protect endangered gorillas.

Tips & Warnings

  • For immediate benefits, donate to organizations that are constructing covered garbage pits in gorilla habitats. This helps protect the gorilla from infection and disease.
