Step 1
Choose an eco-friendly mattress. Many regular mattresses are made with petroleum-based polyester, nylon and polyurethane (PU) foam. In addition, stain and water repellents used on the mattresses can contain formaldehyde. These materials can emit carcinogens and harmful compounds which can cause upper respiratory problems. Instead, choose mattresses made of organic wool or cotton.
-
Step 2
Look for wood products that bear a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label. You should also buy solid wood because particleboard and plywood often contain formaldehyde. Look for renewable wood or other materials.
-
Step 3
Buy organic cotton sheets and bedding materials. Many conventional sheets are made from cotton treated with a variety of insecticides and other materials that can kill fish and other marine life. Pillows can be made of natural materials like buckwheat, millet or chemical-free cotton or filled with recycled materials.
-
Step 4
Shop for used furniture and other items when possible. Using previously owned furniture protects old-growth forests and keeps the items out of landfills. Look in vintage shops, second hand stores and garage sales for solid wood furniture.
-
Step 5
Practice energy saving in the bedroom. Use natural or compact fluorescent lighting, install good insulation and make sure that your windows don't leak air.
-
Step 6
Use healthy paints. Look for low VOC paints for the healthiest choice.
