How to Coach High School Track & Field

Many people avoid coaching a particular sport because they feel they don't possess enough skills to coach effectively. There are many resources available to help anyone coach high school track and field. You can choose from classes, videos and volunteer experience to help develop your coaching strategies.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Visit the Sports Nation Instructional Videos website. They have DVDs on how to get started coaching a high school track and field team. On the home page choose "Track and Field." Next click on the "Coaching Track and Field" link.

  2. Step 2

    Attend a coaching class put on by the United States Track and Field to receive the status of a USATF Level 1 coach. Level 1 coaches are equipped for coaching junior high, high school and clubs. Visit the United States Track and Field website for schedules of classes around the country.

  3. Step 3

    Go to the Advantage Athletics website. They provide sequenced photos, articles and track and field equipment tools to help you develop an effective coaching style. The site provides detailed information on all aspects of track and field.

  4. Step 4

    Volunteer to be an assistant coach at the junior or senior high school level. Experience can be the best teacher. Under the supervision of more experienced coaches you can learn the ropes of how to coach a high school track and field team.
