How to Get a Fishing License in Louisiana

Louisiana offers the recreational fisherman both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Before casting your line, you should review state fishing regulations before fishing in Louisiana waters. Follow these steps to get your license.

Prepare to Purchase Fishing License

1. Visit the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries website (see below).

2. Read Louisiana´s fishing regulations. Go to the top menu and select the ¨Fishing¨ title. Scroll down the sub-menu and highlight ¨Recreational.¨ At the right sub-menu, highlight ¨Regulations." Scroll down the right sub-menu to ¨Fishing¨ and select.

3. Click on each link to review both freshwater and saltwater fishing regulations.

4. Choose ¨Licenses/Permits¨ option from top menu. Scroll down the sub-menu and highlight ¨Fishing,¨ and then from the right sub-menu select ¨Recreational.¨

5. Read the entire page. Decide which license to purchase, and then skip to the next section in this article: ¨Purchase License Online or by Phone.¨ However, if you are confused about what type of license to purchase, continue with the next step.

6. Return to the top menu and select ¨Licenses/Permits.¨ Scroll down the sub-menu to ¨License Wizard¨ and select.

7. Read the information, check the ¨I Agree¨ box and press the ¨Continue¨ button.

8. Select applicable answers and type in your birth date as indicated. Press the ¨Next¨ button.

9. Read the information, choose either saltwater or freshwater fishing and press the ¨Next¨ button. Select any additional saltwater or freshwater gear your use (or leave this blank if it's not relevant) and press the ¨Next¨ button. View which type of license you must purchase.

Purchase Fishing License Online or by Phone

1. Prepare credit card and identification information.

2. Call [phone] to purchase a fishing license by telephone. Write down the authorization number and start enjoying your fishing privileges immediately. Your Louisiana fishing license will arrive by mail.

3. Click the ¨Online¨ link. Read the new page information and press on the ¨Purchase Hunting and Fishing Licenses¨ button.

4. Follow the steps on the website to purchase your fishing license online. View and print your new license, and then grab your fishing rod.
