Improv, short for improvisation, is a performance that features spontaneous, unscripted elements. Even if you don't want to become an actor, these games are fun and will sharpen your imagination.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Play a Warm-up Game

  1. Step 1

Play a game called "Hello." This is a game for everyone. Begin by having the players walk around the room.

  2. Step 2

Tell everyone to meet each other at random and shake hands. They are to shake hands with one person and then move on to the next person. This continues for a little while.

  3. Step 3

Give each greeting a twist. Now, tell the players to greet each other in different ways. For example, first have them greet each other like they are ex-best friends. Then have them greet each other like they are secretly in love.

  4. Step 4

Be creative as you continue to think of many different interesting ways to have the players greet each other. The greetings should be fun and short.

  5. Try a Character Building Game

  6. Step 1

Play a game called "Ding Character." This game is for two people at a time and will play out like a scene.

  7. Step 2

Have the rest of the players be an "audience." Have the audience call out a suggested location in which the scene takes place. Choose the best idea.

  8. Step 3

Ask the audience to call out a situation that would happen at that location. Again, choose the best idea.

  9. Step 4

Tell the players to begin improvising a scene. Then at random intervals you or someone who is not in scene needs to ring a bell.

  10. Step 5

Explain that when the bell rings the actors must instantly become completely different characters in the same scene.

  11. Start a Teamwork Building Game

  12. Step 1

Play a game called "Standing, Sitting, Lying Down." This game is for three players at a time and will play out like a scene.

  13. Step 2

Have the rest of the players be an "audience." Have the audience call out a suggested location in which the scene takes place. Choose the best idea.

  14. Step 3

Ask the audience to call out a situation that would happen at that location. Again, choose the best idea.

  15. Step 4

Tell the players to begin improvising the scene. There must always be one actor standing, one actor sitting and one actor lying down. As soon as a sitter stands up, the stander needs to sit down.

  16. Step 5

Encourage the players to justify the moves with dialog in the scene.
