A campfire is warm, fascinating and hypnotic. People often sit around a fire ring during the day to chat or tell stories. There's something about a campfire that warms the heart. It brings us together and connects us to nature. For some, the best part of a campfire is s'mores. For others, it's getting lost in the dancing flames before bed.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the fire ring on the campground. If there isn't one, and a fire is permitted, try to locate the site of a previous fire rather than disturb new ground.

  2. Step 2

Prevent forest fires. Build the fire ring away from trees, brush and overhanging limps.

  3. Step 3

Splinter two one-foot pieces of dry wood for kindling. Shred newspaper as the fire starter, then use the kindling to build around the newspaper.

  4. Step 4

Add a few dry branches. Touch a single match to the newspaper.

  5. Step 5

As the fire grows, feed it larger, dry limbs and split logs. Make the fire large enough to accommodate everyone who wants to enjoy it.

  6. Step 6

Stir water into the fire when it has died down to embers and ash. Use a shovel and work deep into the base of the fire pit, adding more water until all the steam and smoke have stopped.

Tips & Warnings
  • Redwood makes the best kindling. Carry a few pieces with you to the campsite.
  • Before breaking camp, make sure the ashes are completely cool. Pass the back of your hand over the ashes make sure that no more heat is being generated.
  • Don't add starter fluid or gasoline to the fire.
  • Don't leave a burning fire unattended.
