How to Do the Macarena

In the summer of 1997, the song "Macarena" and the quirky line dance with the same name became a global phenomenon. People lined up and danced the Macarena at sporting events, school dances and even political conventions. Today, the Macarena is still a hit at weddings, on cruise ships and in nightclubs. With just a few short steps, you will be able to tear up the dance floor, the next time the DJ plays the Macarena.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Copy of the Macarena or any dance music
  1. Step 1

    Stretch your right arm out straight in front of you with your palm down. Do the same with your left arm.

  2. Step 2

    Turn your right arm and hand over so your palm faces the ceiling. Do the same with your left arm.

  3. Step 3

    Touch your left shoulder with the palm of your right hand. Cross your left arm over your right arm and touch your right shoulder with your left hand.

  4. Step 4

    Place your right hand on the back of your neck. Do the same with your left hand.

  5. Step 5

    Move your right hand and touch your left hip and touch your right hip with your left hand.

  6. Step 6

    Put your right hand on your right hip and your left hand on your left hip.

  7. Step 7

    Circle your hips three times with the beat of the music. Hop and clap as you make a quarter turn with the group. Repeat the steps until the song has ended.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can actually do the Macarena dance to any song with a steady beat. Once you learn the Macarena, grab some friends and try it with other songs too.
  • The easiest way to master the Macarena is to hop in line, watch your fellow dancers and give it a try.
  • Kids love the Macarena. Once you've mastered the dance, teach your kids too. They will love line dancing with you at the next wedding or family gathering.
