A writing workshop is a great way to hone your writing skills and learn the tricks of the writing trade. Writers at all skill levels attend writing workshops to learn their trade; these classes are invaluable for learning the ins and outs of writing in any genre.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Money

Step1
Research workshop listings. There are several websites specializing in writing workshop searches, you'll find several links at below. These search engines do an excellent job of listing writing workshops by date and location.
Step2
Decide how much you're willing to pay. The price of each workshop varies by location, size and duration, so make sure you check the tuition cost before signing up. Most writing workshops require payment prior to attendance.
Step3
Determine what type of workshop is right for you. Writing workshops are held all over the country throughout the year, and are often part of conventions like DragonCon in Atlanta. There are also online writing workshops available if you are unable to attend a workshop in your area.
Step4
Choose which classes you'll attend at the workshop. Many workshops offer a comprehensive array of class types, from romance to nonfiction to fantasy and science fiction. Some workshops will let you take only the classes you want, but most require that you attend all classes in your chosen field.
Step5
Pick a date and location from the listings. If you decide to go with the online writing workshops, you'll still need to block off some time, some last for 6 weeks. Choosing a location close to home will let you save on hotel fees, but not everyone will have that option.
Step6
Send in your registration and payment. Some writing workshops will allow you to do this over the phone, or online. Online writing workshops allow registration over the phone, through their website or through the mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the writing workshop offers classes which fulfill your writing needs. Most of the workshops have websites listing their classes, instructors and what's covered each day. Read this information carefully.
  • To save on travel and hotel expenses, many people are signing up for online writing workshops. These new innovations boast the same quality lessons and instructors as traditional workshops, while allowing you to attend from the freedom of your home. Unless you really just want to go in person, give these new workshops a shot.
