How to Create a Logo for a Website

A logo is important for any small business, but vital for a website. Sure, you can have a bare-bones web presence, but will it attract customers? Research shows that web users flock to pages with superior design and that includes having a prominent logo to catch the eye, and also to promote legitimacy. Big franchise logos provide the biggest boost, but a self-designed logo can do the trick.

From Quick Guide: Start a Website
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the text content of the site. How will the logo accurately represent the product/content? try to create a design that "fits" with the idea presented.

  2. Step 2

Figure out how you can create a logo that will load quickly. This vital distinction between "the quick and the dead" is ultra-important for the web: slow load times mean death for a web-based business. Think about using small pre-designed graphics that will pop up easily along with the rest of the page. Avoid lumbering, complex flash routines.

  3. Step 3

Make the text of your logo legible. An illegible logo will not accomplish its goal (unless it looks really, really cool). And if the text is a negligible element, you still need to make the design readable by creating something that doesn't hurt the eye or confuse the user.

  4. Step 4

Choose a good color scheme. All kinds of color resources are available, but again, it comes down to what fits.

  5. Step 5

Try to jazz up the logo without cutting into load time. Consider using animated .gifs, for example; these low-volume bits really spice up a logo, especially with good design.

Tips & Warnings
  • Brainstorm on paper first. The fact that your logo will be online doesn't change its main purpose which is presentation. Experiment with good text and graphic styles before you commit your idea to the web.
  • Scout around for ideas. The web is full of logos (almost every independent site has one) that can jog your brain for your own original creation.

on 5/28/2008 Scouting around for ideas is a great, using an image search can help with this. While your logo may be 100% your own idea and original to you, someone else may already designed something very similar to it. Scouting can help you avoid the appearance of copying someone's logo.
