Step 1
Watch a parade in a small town. Almost every small town has a Mardi Gras parade. They may not be as big or elaborate as the parades in New Orleans, but they are exciting.
-
Step 2
Participate in a chicken run. People go from door to door asking for ingredients or money for a chicken and sausage gumbo. They are dressed in Mardi Gras costumes and normally ride horses. At the end of the run there is a gumbo for everyone to enjoy.
-
Step 3
Go on a trail ride. Mardi Gras trail rides are very popular in rural areas. You can ride a horse or on a flat-bed trailer pulled by a truck. Some trailers are equipped with barbeque pits and portable toilets. Lots of Mardi Gras decorations and costumes are used.
-
Step 4
Attend a Mardi Gras ball. Even small towns have Mardi Gras balls with a different theme each year. People get dressed up in formal clothing or according to the particular theme of the year.
-
Step 5
Join townspeople on Fat Tuesday for parties and festivities. Mardi Gras festivities always include Cajun food and music, dancing and fun.
