Step 1
Know that transracial adoption is a lot like any other adoption in many ways. All children need the chance to be a part of a loving family. They want parents who will love and care for them.
-
Step 2
Realize that transracial adoption does bring some added challenges. Because you and your adopted child look different from one another, you may draw extra notice. Everyone will know that your child is adopted, and this may put your family under a microscope in a lot of situations.
-
Step 3
Keep in mind that if you adopt a child of another race, you need to be prepared to nurture your child's culture and help him take pride in his heritage. It's important to incorporate your child's background into your own family through holidays, traditions, art, music and other aspects of your life.
-
Step 4
Develop friendships with individuals who share your child's race. Your child needs to have positive role models in place who can help her learn about her heritage and learn how to deal with prejudice and other issues.
-
Step 5
Remember above all that a transracially adopted child is just a child who needs a family. Love and parent your child just like you would any other child. Guide him through life and help him to grow up to be a positive and confident person.
