Wildlife is abundant in Denali National Park. Around 90 percent of visitors will see all four of Denali's marquee wildlife species: Dall sheep, caribou, moose and grizzly bears.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit in the spring, summer or fall to see the most wildlife. You can find many species during this time grazing on the tundra or storing up food for the long, cold winter. During the winter, some animals hibernate while others will hole up in particular areas or dens to survive the cold.

  2. Step 2

Take a bus tour through the park. This is a great activity for the beginning of your visit to Denali because it will help you learn how to spot wildlife in the park. From the bus tour routes, you may see caribou, moose, Dall sheep, grizzly bear and smaller mammals like beaver, fox and lynx.

  3. Step 3

Look for Dall sheep on the mountainsides where they go to feed. They are found most frequently in the eastern and western most areas of Denali. Dall sheep feed on the ridges and steep slope. Look for them on mountain slopes with a pair of binoculars.

  4. Step 4

Watch for moose feeding near small lakes and swamps. Moose move frequently as they search for food. In winter, they are found most often near willow marshes. You may also see moose in the forested areas of Denali National Park.

  5. Step 5

Listen for a wolf's howl, which is a form of communication. Wolf packs tend to stay within their territory but are elusive and will travel up to 30 miles each day. Park rangers or other guides will direct you to good sighting spots, but remember to give this wild animal, as with all the park's wildlife, plenty of space.

  6. Step 6

Keep an eye out for grizzly bears while driving or taking a bus tour. They are often found near food sources, like berry patches or salmon areas. Check with park rangers to learn what you should do if you encounter a grizzly bear while you are hiking outside the car.

  7. Step 7

Seek birds in virtually every habitat in Denali from the wetlands to the alpine tundra. Golden eagles are found in areas of rock outcrops while ducks and loons are often seen in the park's lakes and wetlands.
