How to Find a Family-Friendly Bed and Breakfast

Imagine your family enjoying a peaceful night's sleep and waking to crispy fresh bacon, homemade muffins, cinnamon rolls and other comforts of home on your next vacation. Although many bed and breakfasts aren't traditionally suitable for kids under 12, more family-friendly inns are popping up than ever before. Just follow these steps, and you'll never settle for questionable motels and drive-thru breakfast sandwiches again.

1. Decide where you and your family want to travel. Discuss when you'll go, and how long you'll be there. Also, choose activities in the area the whole family can enjoy.

2. Log on to the American Bed & Breakfast Association. Enter the name of the state or community where you want to go.

3. Make sure the properties are close to plenty of kid-friendly activities and attractions, rather than wineries or nightlife.

4. Contact the innkeepers, and ask if the accommodations are suitable for families. Pay special attention to their reactions, and notice any hesitation. Many bed and breakfasts are listed as family friendly, but they don't allow kids under 12 years old. Ask innkeepers to clarify what they mean by family friendly.

• Contemporary homes are more likely to be kid-friendly than traditional Victorians.
• Avoid properties that would appeal to honeymooners or seniors, such as those with an emphasis on quiet, seclusion and tranquility.
