How to Treat a Gunshot Wound

Gunshot wounds are serious injuries and can prove fatal if not given proper treatment at the right time. Administering first aid is the most crucial step in responding to any gunshot wound before the ambulance arrives and the victim is taken to the hospital.

Instructions

1. Immediately call the local medical emergency number and police station to ask for assistance. Give as much information as possible about the severity of the situation. Analyze quickly how deep the gunshot wound is. A big hole indicates a serious injury.

2. Avoid moving the victim as any unnecessary motion can further deteriorate his condition.

3. Try to apply direct pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding. Constant bleeding can cause death. Use towels or your hands to help clot the blood and place any plastic covering on the wound to stop the air from rushing in. Wear protective gloves if available to protect yourself and the victim from infection.

4. When a victim is not breathing, start compressing the chest with your hand to give CPR. Let the chest rise up fully before applying pressure again. If you are in a public building, ask if there is an automated external defibrillator.

5. Do not give any liquid to the victim. Do not elevate any part of the body if the victim remains unconscious.

• For your own safety, analyze the scene carefully and then go for help.

• Only give CPR if the victim is not breathing. Unnecessary compressions can send the victim in shock.
