Step 1
Spend five minutes thinking about a typical day. Efficiency can be important when deciding on a hairstyle. If you are an active mom, a shorter bob might be best. If you are a person who meets with clients all day, you might prefer longer, more easily styled hair. If you are always late for appointments, you might consider a cut that requires no styling at all.
-
Step 2
Clip pictures from magazines and newspapers and print out photos from the Internet. Keep a folder for styles that catch your eye. Look at all kinds of magazines, not just hairpublications. Study the pictures to determine whether your face will go with a particular style, and take the pictures when you visit your stylist.
-
Step 3
Measure your face. You have a round face if the width and length of your face are equal (approximately). You could also have a square face in this situation if your jawbone is more distinct. You have an oval face if the length of your face is 1.5 times more than the width. You have an oblong face if the length is significantly more than the width. And you have a heart face if your forehead and cheekbones are much wider than your jawline.
-
Step 4
Use your face shape to decide what style suits you best. Women with oval faces are lucky--any hairstyle will work. Heart faces are also easy as long as you avoid fringed bangs. Oblong or narrow faces should consider shorter, fuller hairstyles. Long hair just makes your face look longer. Round faces should do just the opposite--avoid bobs and grow out your hair. Square faces should go for a softer look. Ask your hairstylist for suggestions.

Step 5
Ask your friends. Trusted friends and family are the best to consult when it comes to personal style. Ask for their honesty, and they will give you plenty of hairstyle opinions.

Step 6
Experiment in the mirror. Silly as it sounds, reworking your hair into different temporary styles will help you decide which hairstyles are working. Borrow a friend's wig if you are looking to grow your hair out.
