Step 1
Think about what serenity means to you. There is no set format for a serenity garden. Therefore, the design should begin as a reflection of your own ideas of serenity.
-
Step 2
Write down your ideas in a journal or sketch them out on paper. Common serenity garden themes include a spiritual garden that reflects your religious beliefs, a memorial garden or a relaxation garden.
-
Step 3
Examine the topography of your existing yard. Decide where the serenity garden will be placed. Ideally, it should be in a location that already has elements of tranquility away from loud noises and odors.
-
Step 4
Select features for your garden. A spiritual garden should contain symbols of your faith. For relaxation gardens consider furniture for resting or a screened gazebo. A memorial garden should have items that reflect the person or animal you are celebrating. For example, you can include a bird feeder to commemorate a person who loved birds.
-
Step 5
Identify the plant life you want in your garden. Research plants and flowers that are specific to your faith. For relaxation gardens, consider various shades of green in different textures. Finally, for memorial gardens consider using plants that were special to the person or animal you remember.
-
Step 6
Consider the addition of a pathway in your garden. Wooden, rock and flagstone paths provide beauty and an inviting welcome to a serenity garden.
-
Step 7
Include a sound element in your garden by adding wind chimes, a miniature waterfall or speakers to play music.
