How to Add Page Transitions in Microsoft PowerPoint

Once you have created a slide show using Microsoft PowerPoint, add some pizazz to your presentation with page transitions. Transitions change the way a slide behaves as it segues into the next slide. While adding "flair" doesn't make up for a lack of substance, it can make the difference when competing for promotions, getting an A grade or selling your idea to a client. Instructions

    • 1

Choose the slide you would like to modify with a transition. Slides can be found using the scroll bar in the "Slide Pane" or "Outline Pane" on the left-hand side of the screen. Another option is to use the "Slide Sorter" view to find your slide by choosing "View" on the top menu bar.

    • 2

Select "Slide Transition" from the "Slide Show" button on the top menu bar. An area will open on the right-hand side of the screen showing various options for slide transitions for your page.

    • 3

Click a transition from the choices available in the "Apply to Selected Slides" list box, such as "Wipe Up" or "Box In." Be consistent with transitions throughout your presentation because it gets annoying to see a different transition for each slide.

    • 4

Modify your transition by changing the speed of the transition or adding sound. You can use the "Loop Until Next Sound" check box to have the sound effect continue until the next slide, but avoid this option if you will be talking during the presentation to ensure you're not trying to yell over an "Applause" or "Drum Roll" sound effect.

    • 5

Time your slide by having the slide advance on your mouse click or by choosing a specific time using a check mark in the appropriate box. It may be best to advance using the mouse click unless you have practiced your presentation and know exactly how long each slide takes.

    • 6

Apply the transitions to all slides unless you have a reason for making each slide different. If so, repeat the steps for each individual slide.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't overdo the special effects or your audience will be distracted and might miss the message you are trying to convey.
