Yacht is also known as General, and is sold in the United States under the name Yahtzee. Kids are thrilled with the rattle the 5 dice make in the dice cup, and adults find themselves getting caught up in the competition as they complete 12 rounds and try for the largest total at the end.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 dice
  • Dice cup
  • Pen
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Determine order of play. Play clockwise from the first person.

  2. Step 2

Roll all 5 dice in the dice cup and throw out onto the table. View the dice and decide what category you are going to attempt. Keep the dice that helps you achieve that category and place the discarded dice back into the dice cup.

  3. Step 3

Choose a category from the accepted list. You must fill in each category and must zero out that category if you miss rolling all the accepted numbers. The categories are: Yacht is a five of a kind; Big straight is 2-3-4-5-6; Little straight is 1-2-3-4-5; Four of a kind is exactly what it sounds like; Full house is a pair and a triple (such as 2-2-4-4-4); Choice is the total of all the dice after the third throw. The numeric categories are Sixes, Fives, Fours, Threes, Twos and Ones.

  4. Step 4

Throw the dice a second time, determining afterwards if you want to try for the category you originally chose or if you want to alter your plans. You may keep out any dice and re-roll any others, including the dice you kept out the last turn.

  5. Step 5

Toss the remaining dice for a third and last time as you attempt to achieve a category, either one of your choosing or one that is a better choice due to a higher score.

  6. Step 6

Score your round by adding up the number on the dice or utilizing the assigned score. A Yacht always scores 50 points and the Straights score 30 points. Add all the facing dice together for a four of a kind, full house and choice. Add only the correct numbers for sixes, fives, fours, threes, twos and ones. For example, if you rolled a 3-4-5-5-5, you would score 15 towards your fives categories.

  7. Step 7

Zero out any score that you can not accomplish. This happens a lot at the end of the game. If you attempt threes and don't get any, and you have no other category to assign numbers to, you must zero out a category.

  8. Step 8

Win the game by having the largest total within all the categories at the end of the game.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a Yahtzee scorepad and their alternate scoring for ease of play.
  • You do not have to roll three times. If you want to take your score from roll two, you may score and then pass the dice to the next player.
  • If a die rolls off the table or sits at an angle on something (such as a score pad), it must be thrown again.
