How to Play Klondike Solitaire

This standard solitaire game is familiar to anyone who has played solitaire on a computer. Klondike solitaire is believed to have been invented in Alaska during the gold rush. It is the most popular version of solitaire. You can while away many hours while trying to arrange all the cards in ascending orders on the foundation of the four Aces.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard deck of cards
  1. Step 1

Shuffle a standard deck of cards thoroughly, having removed the Jokers.

  2. Step 2

Deal out seven cards, with the first card facing up and the other six facing down.

  3. Step 3

Continue to deal, moving one space to the right and always dealing one card up and the rest down. At the end of the dealings, you will have seven cards facing up with only one card in the far left column and eight cards (seven face down and one face up) in the right column. You will have a small stack of cards left over which are your reserve.

  4. Step 4

Remove any face up Aces to the top of the tableau, starting your foundations. Eventually you will have all four Aces at the top of the playing field and you will begin to build on the Aces in ascending order.

  5. Step 5

Begin play on the tableau by moving any descending card of an opposite color onto a higher card. For example, a 4 of (red) Hearts may be played on either a 5 of Spades or 5 of Clubs (both black.) You may also move sections of cards onto a new card, such as 6, 5, 4 combination onto a 7 of the appropriate color.

  6. Step 6

Turn up the next face down card once you have removed the face up card on top of it. It may then be immediately played. If you play a card within the tableau that leaves a space, you may fill that space with any King card.

  7. Step 7

Build on your Ace foundations as you turn up lower numbered cards within the same suit. After your Ace, you must then play the 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on within the same suit. Once cards have been played on the foundation, they may no longer be removed and put back in play.

  8. Step 8

Continue play until you have exhausted any moves.

  9. Step 9

Turn up the third card in your reserve pile and determine if it can be played on your foundation or tableau. If so, you may now view and play the second card. You may continue down the pack until you can no longer play. If you can not play, you turn up the next third card and try again.

  10. Step 10

Go through your reserve pack three times, continuing to play on your tableau and foundation.

  11. Step 11

Win the game by moving all the cards onto the foundation so each of the four suits are in order (Aces, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen and King).

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch carefully for all possible moves. You don't want to rush through the reserve pile since you only have three tries. Check each card against the tableau as well as the foundation and make sure to keep an eye on cross tableau moves.
