Garage sales are a great way to clean out your house of unwanted items and make money while doing it. People love to go to garage sales to see what they might find. Here are some tips to help you hold a successful garage sale.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Folding tables
  • Clothes rack
  • Garage sale signs

Step1
Organize all of the items in categories such as clothes, media, toys, housewares and shoes. This organization helps potential buyers locate what they are looking for more easily. If they can find it, they can buy it.
Step2
Display the items at eye level. Use folding tables for small items. Hang clothes on a rack. People tend to buy items that they can see at eye level.
Step3
Mark the price clearly on each item. You are more likely to sell the item if the prospective buyer knows how much you want for it. Rather than tracking you down to ask the price, she may just put the item back on the table.
Step4
Be willing to negotiate. The idea is to get rid of the items. It is better to get a little less than your asking price than nothing at all.
Step5
Advertise for your garage sale. Place an ad in your local newspaper and post signs around your neighborhood. People have to know about the sale for it to be a successful garage sale.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared to open your garage sale for business early in the morning. Many shoppers arrive at the crack of dawn to try and beat the crowd.
  • Try to plan your garage sale for a good weather day.
