Cleaning a kitchen when moving in is initiative-based: it's up to you what level of clean you want to start with. But general standards are to make sure there's no germ content accessible to your foods and dining areas. There are simple things you can do to accomplish this standard.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Wipe down all door and cabinet handles and counter areas with an anti-bacterial towel or wipe.
Step2
Sweep and mop floors, and dust cabinet interiors. You can also lay shelf paper in cabinets to ensure cleanliness for storage.
Step3
Clean the refrigerator. Get rid of any noticeable stains or spots where you will be storing food. A box of baking soda in the back doesn't hurt, either.
Step4
Wipe off the stove surfaces. If the stove hardware (burners, plates, grids) look too dirty for your liking, buy new and install.
Step5
Get rid of anything the last guests left behind. Doing a clean sweep will make the kitchen like new for your own cooking and dining. Decorating will make it seem more like yours and help you to feel at home there.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't let your landlord off the hook: if the place seems to dirty or cluttered when you move in, call him/her up first thing and get an agreement. Document all breakage when you move in so it can't be charged to you later, and if there is too much left behind, let the landlord know it's their responsibility to get you a clean and uncluttered kitchen.
