There will come a time when you reach the end of your skein of yarn, or you might want to knit something that is multi-colored. At that point, you'll need to join a new skein into your knitting. It's best to try to join your yarn at the beginning of a row.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn
  • Pattern
  1. Step 1

Measure to see how much yarn you have left.

  2. Step 2

Slip the right needle into the first stitch.

  3. Step 3

Put the new yarn over the existing yarn, and place it between the needles, keeping the tail to the left side approximately four inches.

  4. Step 4

Bring the new yarn from under the old yarn, and knit twisting both together, leaving enough yarn to sew.

  5. Step 5

Tie the ends in a knot after several stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you're running low on yarn, measure to make sure you'll have enough. If you don't think you'll have enough to finish the row, just stop there, and join a new ball of yarn with a new row.
  • To measure, yarn should reach four times across the width of your piece.
